Village Harmony Alumni Camp – May 20 – June 2, 2019 – $775

Date: May 20-June 2, 2019
Venue: Village Harmony Headquarters
Leaders: Larry Gordon, Sophie Michaux, Adam Jacob Simon
Price: $775

Our alumni camp is primarily for young adult Village Harmony alumni, but is open to other experienced singers age 18 to 26.

We deliberately keep the overhead low for this program so that we can make this session affordable for college students and young adults of limited means.

Leaders will be Larry Gordon, Sophie Michaux and Adam Simon

The session’s challenging and eclectic repertoire will include early vocal and instrumental music (Monteverdi, Weelkes, Charpentier), American shape note, Jubilee Quartet music, modern Cuban choral arrangements, sea shanties and pub songs, black South African dance songs Bulgarian and traditional Quebequois folk songs.

Accommodations and meals will be at Larry’s spacious house in Marshfield, Vermont with further accommodations at another nearby house.  Rehearsals will be divided between Larry’s house and the nearby Plainfield Friends Meeting.

The initial, intense rehearsal week will be followed by an eight-concert New England tour with performances each evening with home stays following every concert.

Larry Gordon

Village Harmony founder and director LARRY GORDON has been making community music in Vermont since the early 1970s. He founded Village Harmony in 1989, and his patient and relaxed, yet demanding, teaching style and his collaborative approach have shaped the welcoming atmosphere of the Village Harmony community since the beginning. Though his first love was medieval and renaissance music, he is a vital figure in New England shape-note singing, and he is the music editor of the popular Northern Harmony shape-note songbook. Larry is an inspired organizer with an unerring eye for good repertoire and a unique knack of pulling together interesting combinations of singers and letting them shine.  Larry has led Onion River Chorus in Montpelier since the late 1970s, and is well known across the US and internationally for leading stunning periodic ad hoc incarnations of Northern Harmony, a semi-professional tour group made up largely of veteran Village Harmony singers.  Recently he has been devoting increasing time to teaching Balkan folk dancing.

Sophie Michaux

Sophie Michaux was born in London and raised in the French Alps. Although she focuses on classical music, her versatility and musical curiosity have brought her to be an active performer in many repertoires including French Cabaret songs, English Sea Shanties, as well as a variety of world polyphonies: in 2014 and 2017, she toured the U.S and Europe with Northern Harmony. She was one of the lead singers in the 2018 Cambridge Christmas Revels, alongside VH leaders Gideon Crevoshay and Lysander Jaffe: Venetian Celebration. She is the founding member of Sophie et Adam, a folk music duet with guitarist and singer Adam Jacob Simon, and of Culomba, a world music ensemble with Adam Simon (Voice, Guitar, Double Bass), and Lysander Jaffe (Voice, Violin), Sora Harris-Vincent (voice and Shruti box), and Avery Sherman (voice). She has also explored the Yiddish song repertoire. More at

Adam Jacob Simon

VH alumnus Adam Jacob Simon—born and raised in Cambridge, MA—is an avid folk singer performing frequently with Northern Harmony, traveling throughout Europe, South Africa and the U.S. As co-founder of the folk music duo “Sophie et Adam” alongside his wife, French mezzo-soprano Sophie Michaux, he frequently performs a varied repertoire of European and American folk music. He is an accomplished classical singer as well, recently performing the tenor solos in Mozart’s Mass in c minor with the Onion River Chorus in Montpelier VT. Recent solo highlights have been the tenor Evangalist in Arvo Pärt’s “Passio” and baritone in Duruflé’s Requiem with the Trinity Church Choirs in Boston, where he serves as staff singer. As a composer, Adam has enjoyed many recent performances and commissions from nationally acclaimed ensembles including Lorelei Ensemble, Conspirare, Seraphic Fire, WordSong Boston, Palaver Strings and the Oriana Consort.

Rehearsal week will be at Larry’s spacious 3-level house 15 miles northeast of Montpelier, nestled in woodlands off a dirt road. We can choose from bunkrooms, a screen house in the woods, or beds in the retired VH tour buses down the hill from the main house.
