This camp features a particularly exciting trio of leaders.
Bongani Magatyana, from the townships of Capetown, South Africa, has an especially deep knowledge of South African traditional music and culture and he is a truly great teacher with an particularly clear way of imparting the sometimes elusive rhythms of traditional South African singing and dancing. He is also a wonderful composer of new songs in the folk style. His infectious enthusiasm can coax a big South African sound out of even the most timid singers.
Dynamic gospel leader Kathy Bullock from Berea, KY will lead the group in a set of black spirituals and gospel music, weaving history into the singing as the group explores the connections between African American music, history, and its African origins. The amazing Dr. Bullock always brings a deep love and passion for music to her teaching, and generates infectious excitement in its performance.
Village Harmony founder Larry Gordon will lead shape-note, Balkan and Corsican songs, and a set of haunting short pieces by Estonian composer Urmas Sisask. Larry will also lead English country and contra dance sessions each evening with music performed live by Village Harmony alumnus Clayton Clemetson and others.
Our new venue for this camp is Buxton School in Williamstown, Mass, which has a beautiful campus with several excellent singing and dancing spaces and a range of accommodations.
Basic rooms are shared (4-bed) occupancy. Participants can choose to reserve single or double rooms for a supplemental fee of $100 or $50, respectively.
The camp will conclude with two concerts: Friday night at Buxton School, and Saturday afternoon, an hour’s drive east, in Ashfield Mass.
