Join us in a magnificent 15th-century abbey within walking distance of Lake Garda for a week of harmony singing in Italy. All singers are welcome, regardless of experience.

Led by Carlo Pozzoli from Milano, Matlakala Bopape from South Africa, and John Mark Harrison from Vermont.

We’ll be staying in a beautiful 15th century abbey near the shores of Lake Garda, near Desenzano del Garda and the picturesque medieval town of Sirmione. Built in 1490 on the site of an ancient religious house, the Abbey of Maguzzano has spotless, simple and welcoming twin or single rooms (single rooms available for a small supplemental fee), some en suite and and others sharing the plentiful bathrooms in the corridor.

Delicious home-style Italian meals will be prepared by the Abbey, and served with wine.

Matlakala Bopape

matlakalalgMATLAKALA BOPAPE, of Polokwane, South Africa, is the director of Polokwane Choral Society—a community-based group whose aim is nurturing musical talent in African society. As a director, Matlakala is committed to drawing out musical excellence from her singers, as well as exposing them to musical cultures of the world. Her limitless patience, careful attention to vocal technique, and rich repertoire of folk and contemporary South African choral music make her a formidable teacher. This will be Matlakala’s 17th year teaching with Village Harmony, after a fortuitous initial meeting with Patty & Larry at Festival 500 in St. John, Newfoundland in 1999.

Carlo Pozzoli

CARLO POZZOLI directs the Beato Vergine Choir of Seregno; Piccolo Coro; Coro CAI of Melegnano; and the Milan Ensemble Vocale. In his choirs he mixes both sacred and international repertoire. He is an award-winning middle school music educator. Since 1997 he has regularly collaborated with Village Harmony, for which he has conducted choral sessions in Italy, United States, Great Britain and South Africa. Carlo and John have worked together on several previous singing camps in Italy, and are looking forward to doing it again!

John Mark Harrison

harrisonjohnJOHN MARK HARRISON is a dynamic choral director, workshop leader and composer from Vermont. His passion is the search for and development of an American choral tradition that integrates African-American Gospel music, jazz, blues, shape-note, rock and roll, country, and Appalachian music. In his compositions and teaching he strives to combine these great American traditions to create a unique choral music that is rhythmically sung and rich with story. John has directed the Montpelier Community Gospel Choir in Montpelier, VT for the last 18 years. He has led camp sessions for Village Harmony for many years, as well working with Brendan Taaffe’s Turtle Dove Harmony. John brings to all his teaching a deep love for choral singing and its power to create community, as well as a lot of humor. He lives in Plainfield, VT with his wife Scottie.

We’ll be staying in the beautiful 15th century Abbey of Maguzzano. Located near Desenzano del Garda and the picturesque medieval town of Sirmione—both on the shore of Lake Garda near Verona— the abbey was built in 1490 on the site of an ancient religious house. The Abbey has spotless, simple and welcoming twin or single rooms, some en suite and and others sharing the plentiful bathrooms in the corridor. There will be a $150 supplement for a single room.
