Nathan Morrison
THIS CAMP IS FULL.
Veteran VH leader Suzannah Park grew up performing with her professional folk-singing family, and her arrangements of traditional Appalachian songs ring out the best in young voices--and her enthusiasm and energy always pervade the camps she leads.
Evgeny Efremov of Kiev will join Village Harmony for the third time, teaching the haunting and evocative folk music of his native Ukraine.
And Village Harmony/Northern Harmony alumnus and pianist Nathan Morrison will lead a selection of traditional and contemporary American shape-note and gospel songs, and put together a rollicking jazz band with any instrument players who come to camp.
Rehearsal will be at Stump Sprouts in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, with an ensuing concert tour that will include some of our favorite stops in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Rehearsal week will be at Stump Sprouts, Hawley, MA
$1,225
Leaders
SUZANNAH PARK began participating in Village Harmony Camp when she was twelve, but has been singing virtually from the moment she could speak. She comes from a family of three generations of professional traditional musicians and singers, and has performed and taught for the past 13 years. Her intuitive teaching style, born of a lifetime of familiarity with American folk music, makes her an extremely valuable teacher. She recently moved back to North Carolina, the place of her birth, where she is making music, gardening and clogging. This is Suzannah's ninth year teaching at Village Harmony. www.suzannahpark.com.
EVGENY EFREMOV grew up in Kiev, Ukraine. When he was 21, he encountered the rich polyphonic music of rural Ukraine for the first time. Now a professor in the Department of Ethnomusicology at the Ukrainian National Musical Academy, Evgeny has collected and studied traditional music in ethnomusicological expeditions to different regions of Ukraine since 1971, and he leads the folk ensemble Drevo, the first group in Ukraine to perform traditional village singing as a living phenomenon. Evgeny led a Village Harmony traveling camp in Ukraine in 2008, and will be teaching a teen camp in the US for the second time.
NATHAN MORRISON hails from the mountains of Vermont where he grew up exploring the woods and music of all kinds. His parents sang with Larry Gordon in the late 80’s, thereby influencing the styles of singing Nathan would come to love in high school while singing with Village Harmony. He managed to escape high school a year early to sing with Northern Harmony in Europe and across the US before heading to Hampshire College. After deciding definitely not to study music, he designed a major combining jazz and religious experiences. Nathan now lives and makes music in Asheville, NC as a partner with his wife, Suzannah Park.
Stump Sprouts Retreat Center
Hawley, Massachusetts
Situated in rural northwest Massachusetts, Stump Sprouts is a rustic multi-season resort and retreat facility. The center of activity is our hand crafted guest lodge, converted dairy barn, and 200 year old farmhouse. Located on 450 acres of woods and meadows, featuring splendid vistas and hiking trails, and organic gardens that will provide vegetables for the kitchen, these unspoiled lands set the stage for two Village Harmony teen retreats this year.
